Hardware store (though, in fairness, between PineyBranch hardware and Strosniders, we’’re pretty wellserved a short drive away). My main point is that Takoma Park has too many of thesame type of antique/jewelry/gift stores but lackssome more practical, neighborhood-friendly options.

It would be great to have a good bakery, although Iwonder if a baker would make it in TP with thecompetition from (poor quality) places like Savory, and the co-op. I would like a quality pizza place that is capable ofdoing delivery!I would like to see a ready-meal takeout place (withthe kinds of prepared foods you can get at Whole Foods).A Radio Shack would be excellent.A large indoor play center for kids, with many moonbounces.I think a Starbucks should open in the now-closed drycleaners on Maple Ave near Sherman.

I value Takoma Park because it isn’’t like other placesthat have these things. No congestion, no hugeparking lots, no crowds. I would much rather travel15 min to Silver Spring to do my shopping andrestaurant visits and preserve Takoma Park as apleasant place to *live* and look at.

Very much AGAINST having a butcher in Takoma Park. Would like to see a bakery like Sticky Fingers: www.StickyFingersBakery.com or Babycakes: www.babycakesnyc.com Note that I am against extensive development in Takoma Park. Takoma Park’’s greatest charm is its livability and character. Hope new shops would open in existing buildings.

I find there are no decent stores in Takoma Park. A good toy store would be great and a good bookstore with children section (!!!!). There are tons of kids here and there there are no decent stores with kids stuff.

1. Very good hair salon (Tony and Guy, Ipsa)2. Very good shoe store, not shoe repair3. Really nice antique store. This one, with appraisals or information on old houses, would be particularly good for here. 4. Old house store (like Restoration Hardware).I think you have to think of a non-Silver Spring niche. I think going more quotupscalequot or going more quotoldscalequot might be better than going more downscale.

Purple Mtn. Organics is already great for gardening so I hope it stays. As for baking, a place that made fresh bread, including pita might do well. I travel to Mediterranean Bakery in Alexandria, VA to buy fresh pita bread. Maybe Middle East Market wants to expand (?).

bookstore combined with record store, with a coffeeshop, comfy chairs and place to play pool. Need to doa survey to find out a good specialty niche for thekinds of books and records,so not competing with thebig chains. If right niche is found could pull inpeople from farther afield than Takoma Park. I thinksuch a place would do fine since the collection atBorders in SS is pretty much bottom of the barrel massmarket dreck.

To make it viable you would have to have criticalmass, but it would be nice to have a bunch of shopsand boutiques, some variety. NO MORE VINTAGE CLOTHES.E.g. I often go to the area on Connecticut Ave(Politics and Prose, Child’’s play, Catch Can, andthere are a couple shops there where I get things likenice wrapping paper and some housewears). The parkingthere is much harder than TP but I go anyway. I stillmiss Chuck and Dave’’s. I like the new quotFair Days Playquotbut it will always be limited by size.

Bookstore. Toy store. I strongly believe thatdowntown Takoma can support a bookstore with a goodmagazine area and a quality toy area. Chuck andDave’’s could have done very well if it was wellorganized. It was impossible to negotiate. As therecent face lift of the Co-op shows, good storeorganization can make a huge difference. The newCo-op is easy to shop in and I spend twice as muchthere as I used to. Even if Takoma had a chainitcould be a small Borders like the airports have, itwould be nice. Even better would be a small Olsoons, like the one they have at National airport.

Please! - No butcher! I’’ll put my house on the market tomorrow!used/alternative bookstorehardware storegood coffee shop.... I don’’t think the options we have meet the barfull service grocery store (butcher can go there if need be!)true thrift storequotbasicquot clothing store (be that Gap or whatever) - I accept that with new dense housing on the way, we can choose to embrace and support a Caribou Coffee/Starbuck’’s/etc., Gap, Borders.. or not.Just generally - more things to serve our neighborhood’’s everyday needs. There appear to be far too many gift-shop, pricey fair trade, etc. stores here. I am totally in favor of the above, but only to a point, as I have limited means as do many of my neighbors. I’’d rather drive/Metro to buy gifts a few times a year than drive to buy groceries or go to a great Thai meal a few times a month!

We need a variety store like Bruce Variety in Bethesda!!!!!! Please, someone on this committee, go over there and look around and you will see what I mean! Everything from sewing and arts crafts to household items, wallets, backpacks, school supplies, and socks. (Because I’’m not sure whether the next question on this survey will address this, I’’ll jump ahead here to comment on the current mix of stores.) We have too many quotold hippiequot/second hand stores in Takoma. There I am an old hippie myself but I don’’t need any more patchouli-fragranced garments. I also think it is a shame that Chuck Dave’’s pulled out before Borders came into downtown Silver Spring. I would definitely patronize a store like the quotoldquot Chuck Dave’’s before it switched focus to a kids’’ store. Don’’t get me wrong I did shop there after it changed focus but it was such a great amenity to have a bookstore, albeit with some toys, as a community focal point.

It would be nice to have a coffee shop that was not so run down. As I said earlier, the last time I was in Savory it was so dirty and the food was so stale I’’ve been loathe to go back but maybe I just had a bad experience. It would be nice to have a little book store/coffee shop or more cute little stores to browse. I would walk downtown more frequently. I suspect with the new condos going up more restaurants and shops could be supported. It would be nice to have a hardware store too.

A butcher would be great!! A bakery more like Firehook. A bookstore like Politics and Prose or Chuck and Daves. More mainstream gift shops. I like Now and Then, but we need more variety and things that you can give to someone who is more traditional and conservative. The main problem in TP is that most of the stores sell discretionary items. The clothing is targetted at 20-somethings or very casual offices. There are places to buy interesting, niche gifts, but not things you need everyday.

The single thing I would want the most is a greengrocer that also sells fish/meat that is convenientlylocated near the Metro so I could stop each night onmy way home and buy fresh products for dinner. I thinksuch a place would make a mint. It owuld not have tobe big (e.g., see the small grocers in New York City).Particularly given the success of Whole Foods, themargins at the Coop, and the foot traffic coming offthe Metro, I am mystified that no one has opened oneon Carroll Avenue or other nearby streets (e.g, thepet store location would have been a perfect locationfor such a business).

We need something that is an attraction to consumers from outside of Takoma Park, but also consistent with the character of Takoma Park. I’’d like to see a quotGreen Business Centerquot including food, housing materials, plant/landscaping, energy, construction. We could also include some other cutting edge local economy like a credit union. Also, we need office space to have people in town during the day. I’’d suggest a non-profit advocacy center for progressive non-profits that provides the groups some common services, e.g. a tv/radio studio where groups can produce their own shows (perhaps takoma cable could be involved), an auditorium and meeting rooms so groups can hold events.

It would be great if some place sold magazines, newspapers and CDs (other than folk) as part of theirbusiness. Especially if you could hang out there andread, drink coffee. (sounds like an add on forSavory... can I just say here that much as I like thelive music on Friday nights, I wish the food wasbetter. It’’s the only place in town that can’’t eventoast a bagelno really. burned and too much butter.I was flabbergasted.)Maybe one of the dry cleaners could start repairingshoes. We could also use a better wine storethe place onCedar by the Metro isn’’t very good. Though it might behard to compete with the places in Silver Spring andMorris Miller. Again, perhaps it could be a niche/sidebusiness for a merchant downtown, along with goodcheese, bread.
