Really good food tablecloths interesting wines beer no microwaved leftovers a la Savory and Everyday Gourmet. Perhaps Italian (not pizza, red-sauce pasta), French, Spanish dishes thoughtful menu, creative preparation, high-quality food. We also need interesting stores and not junktique shops like the way-too-many that grace the streets of Takoma Park’’s downtown now. Maybe an Italian salumeria, a wine shop specializing in wines from the US, diversity such as one finds in Alexandria (VA) as well as high quality merchandise. Emphasis should be in quality and diversity efforts should steer away from repetition and tackiness.

An Italian place would be great again... the ones near by are on the high end and we like pasta! We do carry-outs a lot, so a place that offers that would be great too. A restaurnat like Sweet Water Tavern in VA might also do well since it would have a variety of dishes along with nightly specials. I think that the restaurant would need to have a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes to survive in Takoma Park.

1) TOP PRIORITY: A neighborhood pub that serves goodfood like Colonel Brooks Tavern in Brookland (D.C.)and the Olney Ale Tavern in Olney. A place that’’s bothkid-friendly and has good beer on tap, that has a mixof sandwiches and more elaborate dishes. Maybe theowners of Colonel Brooks, Ellis Island (also inBrookland) or Jackie’’s in Silver Spring could bepersuaded to open a place like this in the Taliano’’sspace.2) Beyond a neighborhood pub, I’’d be happy with somehigh-quality, authentic ethnic food in a place whereyou can sit down and have a meal as well as take out good Chinese (there’’s so much bad stuff out there),Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Ethiopian, West African,Caribbean, Latin American (though there’’s already tonsof this nearby), whatever.

Something along the lines of Black’’s Market in Garrett Park or Addies. They have a reasonable brunch, lunch and dinner. Very good food and affordable. I wish you could put a restaurant in the house behind Savory when ages ago the Co-op tried a restaurant.

Anything in a more nice sit down enviornment. I’’dlike modern American, Italian, or Indian. I’’d alsolike to see a larger Mark’’s Kitchen. The Red RockCanyon Grill in Silver Spring is good modern American. Good Italian is a little hard to find in theareamost Italian places are either old style badpasta or way too heavy. Few have good vegetarianoptions (although Italian food in Italy has greatvegetarian options). A good light Italian restaurant with good veggie options and nice Pizza would benice. Mamma Lucci’’s in Silver Spring does that fairlywell (at night the restaurant has tablecloth wait service.

It would be great to see other restaurants that are open past 9:00 p.m. I would be interested in seeing a restaurant serving pub type food, and any other sorts of ethnic foods. However, I don’’t think it matters the type of food, but that there is a sense that the downtown area of Takoma is vibrant and alive! Right now, the area closes at around 7 p.m. and there isn’’t that much to do, lots of empty building fronts, etc. We would love to be able to walk downtown and go to restaurant or have a few drinks later in the evening, and right now that option doesn’’t necessarily exist in Takoma.

I would like to see a more upscale restaurant added to Takoma Park. I would recommend something like Logan Tavern in Logan Circle in DC. Excellent brunch and lunch on the weekends. Dinner every night. Nice atmosphere table cloth restaurant but not too fancy. Can get anything from egg dishes to french toast to sandwiches or a salad for brunch/lunch and steaks, fried chicken breast, pasta, etc. for dinner. It is all very good. It would be nice to be able to walk with guests to a nice restaurant and I do not feel that Takoma Park has anything like that now. Most of the restaurants feel extremely casual and a bit run down and dirty. The last time I tried to eat something at Savory it was so stale I cannot believe they even sold it to me. I haven’’t been back since. It’’s sad.

Moderately priced food WITH ALCOHOL! Something like Samantha’’s, Jackies, or a smaller Franklins, where you can take your kids, but eat good food. Italian, Mexican, Thai, Burgers, Brew pub, something that serves meat as well as vegetarian dishes. Something clean, with table clothes and some space between the tables and responsive service (which currently does not exist in TP). Something with a seasonal menu, organic options noted on the menu. We need a variety of restaurants - I’’d start with moderately priced, but am happy to support more high-end choices too, which are largely absent even in Silver Spring. In summary, I want businesses that target the many professional, progressive upper middle class families living in TP that want good food, a good drink and good service. I’’ve lived in TP for 15 years, and will continue to shop and dine elsewhere because TP businesses have yet to meet my needs.

Traditional American or Good Greco/Italian. I am notfond of Middle Eastern or the organic scene that seemsto prevail. I would love to see more vegetarian (actually vegan) dishes offered in Takoma Park restaurants. I travel all the time to DC, Silver Spring, and Rockville for restaurants that cater to vegetarians but it would be great if there was one of these restuarants in my home city. I know of a lot of friends and coworkers who live in Takoma Park who are just as frustrated by the lack of vegetarian options as I am.

Anything that is bright, clean, fun, and has decent food (and decent wine). TKPK is a wasteland as far as we’’re concerned. Mark’’s is acceptable as a lunch and brunch place, but not dinner (and it doesn’’t translate well into take-out). Savory has really gone downhill and is very quothippiequot in service and atmosphere.

Neighborhood Pub/Sports (Pub Grub, Darts, Pool, and Drinks), a meeting place with friends Indian (not strictly veggie though) Encouragement for outdoor seating for as many places as possible (or perhaps with the new buildings that are going up, a rooftop location if ground level noise is an issue)Basically, social places and etc type venues that encourage being a destination and encourage foot-traffic however this does mean that there would need to be less political stress over the alcohol issues. There will have to be SOME concessions. Encouragement of social venues will bring in more people both from around the area, and outside.

Whole / Slow Foods.See:http://www.chezpanisse.com/pgalice.htmlAlice Walters and Chez Panisse (Berkley, CA) have become convinced that the best-tasting food is organically grown and harvested in ways that are ecologically sound, by people who are taking care of the land for future generations. The quest for such ingredients has largely determined the restaurant’’s cuisine. Chez Panisse has tried for years to make diners here partake of the immediacy and excitement of vegetables just out of the garden, fruit right off the branch, and fish straight out of the sea. In doing so, Chez Panisse has stitched together a patchwork of over sixty nearby suppliers, whose concerns, like the restaurant’’s, are environmental harmony and optimal flavor.

It’’s not the cuisine, it’’s the location! A lot of folks in the area don’’t have/use cars, and need restaurants in walking distance. For us it’’s easier to get on the metro and go into the city or up to Silver Spring. We could use some good Mexican Korean closer to the metro/old town. Also a thai place, and a sit-down pizza joint. A wine bar would be great - like Iron Bridge Wine Company in Columbia, MD. Or truly any cuisine, just a place that is higher caliber than Middle East Cuisine or Savory. A destination restaurant that town people can enjoy but that also attracts other DC foodie types. Ray’’s the Steaks in Arlington is awesome, 2 Amy’’s Pizza in Glover Park is great too - something along those lines...

excellent pizza-like 2Amy’’s comfy affordable deli all kinds of ethnic welcome: Vietnamese, Spanish tapas like Cafe Atlantico/Jaleo Indian-bring Udupi/Woodlands closer! American regional like Vidalia or Tabard Inn. Most important is the atmosphere and that it ofeers affordable to mid-range. A place that is not so cramped-would allow for running into neighbors, big groups as well as more intimate seating so you are not overwhelmed by activity around you. Cafe Deluxe is an example that accommodates families as well as couples. lively but not hyper. Agood brunch plce would be great where you can read paper or meet a group. Mark’’s is just too crowdedwish he coyuld move to a bigger place w/out door seating. OUTDOOR cafe style options. Did I mention OUTDOOR!!!! anything: rooftop replace the gazebo with a seasonal vendor and cafe tables!!! Remember the great falafel family? Take-out food options places to sit OUTSIDE!

For me it is not so much about the type of cuisine, as the level of restaurant. Old Town TP lacks a fancier restaurant that my wife and I can go to on a quiet, romantic quotdate.quot Even better would be if the restaurant had a room or two attached to offer group childcare on Friday and Saturday nights at reasonable rates (say, $5/hour for first child, less for each add’’l child). This would help facilitate quotdatesquot for married couples. Could be staffed by local HS students, and supervised by a local volunteer parent on a rotating basis (perhaps 1x every 3 months or so) - the HS students being paid and the parent receiving a free meal or coupon for same from the restaurant in exchange for volunteering to supervise babysitters. Patrons could sign a waiver absolving restaurant of liability for kids, to keep its insurance costs down.

American or Eclectic cuisine - but it has to be hip and geared primarily for adults. We have enough places with cheap cafe tables, bright lighting, and high-chairs. We need a more upscale venue with inventive food, trendy atmosphere, and a great wine, cocktail, and beer list. a really good ethnic restaurant, preferably Thai orchinese. But good quality, using fresh ingredients, noheavy sauces loaded with sugar, MSG, salt and all theother junk that makes 90% of the thai and chineserestaurants unbearable. CIty Lights, a chineseretaurant on Conn Ave just North of Dupont Circle hasthe kind of clean, fresh food I mean. It is just aboutthe only one I’’ve found in the DC area. There is aThai restaurant at 17th and P St. NW, also near DupontCircle, that also has wonderful food, with a lighttouch and very reasonable prices. The Thai andchinese restaurants in Silver Spring and Wheaton aretoo heavy handed for my taste, so I never eat at them.

I care less about the particular cuisine as long asit’’s well done and the atmosphere is inviting withoutbeing too pricey. I think the food would have to be good (even betterthan Mark’’s Kitchen) to draw people in from outsideTakoma.
